Sports betting basics

Odds are a price on probability with the bookmaker's mark-up built in. Learn to see it and half the betting myths disappear.

How to read odds

Decimal odds are the most common. Payout = stake ร— odds. A $10 bet at 2.50 returns $25 if it wins, of which $15 is profit.

1.501/2โˆ’20066.7%
2.001/1+10050%
2.503/2+15040%
4.003/1+30025%

Implied probability = 1 รท decimal odds. Odds of 2.50 mean the bookmaker rates the outcome at roughly 40%.

The bookmaker's margin

Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in an event and you get more than 100%. The difference is the margin โ€” the bookmaker's cut.

Example. A tennis match with both players at 1.90. Each implied probability is 1 รท 1.90 โ‰ˆ 52.6%, for a total of 105.3%. The margin is about 5.3%. With no margin, both players would be priced at 2.00.

The lower the margin, the better the price for the bettor. Margins are usually lowest on top football matches and highest on niche events and exotic markets.

Types of bets

  • Single โ€” a bet on one outcome. The simplest and most transparent option.
  • Accumulator (parlay) โ€” several selections on one slip with the odds multiplied together. Bigger payouts, but one losing leg sinks the whole slip, and the margin compounds with every selection.
  • System bet โ€” a set of accumulators built from your selections, so you can still win if some legs lose.
  • Handicap โ€” a virtual head start or deficit. Home โˆ’1.5 wins if the home team wins by two goals or more.
  • Totals (over/under) โ€” a bet on the total number of goals, points or games being over or under a set line.

Live betting

Live (in-play) bets are placed while the match is on, with odds changing every few seconds. It's exciting, but decisions are faster and more emotional. Live margins are often higher than pre-match, and your bet may be rejected if the price moves.

Bankroll and discipline

  • Set aside a separate betting budget you can afford to lose.
  • Stake a small fixed percentage of it, for example 1โ€“3% per bet.
  • Don't chase losses: raising stakes after a loss is the fastest way to empty your bankroll.
  • Keep a record of your bets so you see your real results, not just the wins you remember.

Only bet with bookmakers licensed in the country where you are. That way you have an official channel for complaints if something goes wrong.

What is the bookmaker's margin?

The commission built into the odds. Work it out by adding up (1 รท odds) for every outcome and subtracting 100%.

Which is better: a single or an accumulator?

Mathematically, accumulators carry more margin because it compounds with every selection. Singles are easier to control and analyse.
